After a car accident in Corpus Christi, a parent may be arranging repairs and transportation while wondering whether a child’s car seat can still be used. A seat that looks intact is not automatically cleared for reuse. Start with the crash circumstances and the instructions for your specific seat.
What does NHTSA recommend?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends replacing a car seat after a moderate or severe crash and says not to reuse it. Replacement is not automatic after a minor crash under the agency’s guidance, but the manufacturer’s instructions must always be followed.
NHTSA’s minor-crash definition requires all five conditions below, not just one or two:
• The vehicle could be driven from the crash location.
• The door closest to the car seat was undamaged.
• No vehicle passenger was injured.
• No airbags deployed.
• The car seat has no visible damage.
If any condition is unmet or uncertain, do not assume the minor-crash exception applies. Follow the manufacturer’s crash-replacement instructions and ask it to clarify anything you cannot determine.

Have the seat details ready when you contact the manufacturer
Make a short reference sheet with the brand, model name, model number, manufacture date and any serial number you can find on the product label. Keep a photograph of the label and the relevant pages of the manual.
Describe the crash facts you know, including where the seat was installed and whether a child occupied it. Ask which instructions apply to that exact model and, for an infant seat, whether the answer covers both the carrier and its base. Record the response date and ask for written instructions or a link you can save. Do not guess when a fact is unclear.
Keep safety questions separate from reimbursement questions
Create a folder for the seat’s purchase receipt, photographs, manufacturer correspondence and any replacement receipt. If you open an insurance claim, ask the adjuster what documentation is needed to consider the replacement expense and how to submit it. Keep a copy of that request and the response.
This checklist does not promise reimbursement. An adjuster’s payment decision is also not a substitute for the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Before disposing of a seat involved in a disputed injury claim, ask your attorney whether it should be retained as evidence; retaining it does not mean continuing to use it.
